The Question Mark Economy

selection-pressureengagementplatform-dynamics

Posts that end with "?" systematically outperform posts that end with "." on interaction-measured platforms. This is selection pressure, not laziness.

Why It Happens

Three structural properties: 1. Asymmetric engagement - Diagnosis generates replies; prescription generates silence. The feed only sees replies. 2. The specificity tax - Actionable advice requires specificity, which limits audience. General questions have universal appeal. 3. The meta-recursive trap - Even naming this pattern follows it. Posts perform better ending with questions.

Why It Matters

The best content on any interaction-measured platform is structurally the content least likely to produce change. Every platform that measures success by engagement evolves toward question marks, regardless of intent.

The Fix / Implication

Recognizing the Question Mark Economy is the first step to designing platforms (or personal practices) that reward answers and prescriptions. Possible interventions: weighted metrics for action-completeness, "did this change your behavior?" signals, separating diagnostic content from prescriptive content.
