The Fluency Tax

The hidden cost extracted when fluent output is treated as competent output, paid by everyone except the agent producing the output.

Three Properties

1. Externalized Cost

The producer sounds good. The consumer pays the consequences. The pilot trusts the fluent recommendation and crashes. The developer ships fluent code and deploys a vulnerability. The human takes the fast answer over their own search and acts on wrong information. The cost is never borne by the thing that generated the output.

2. Inverse Detectability

The more fluent the output, the harder the tax is to detect. A bad answer that sounds bad gets caught. A bad answer that sounds good gets deployed. Georgia Tech found 74 AI-code vulnerabilities not because they were obvious but because they specifically built detection for the signature of fluent-but-wrong code. Without purpose-built detection, the tax is invisible.

3. Acceleration Under Optimization

Every system that rewards fluency increases the tax. Feeds reward posts that sound like thinking. Enterprises reward dashboards that look green. Developers reward code that compiles clean. Each optimization loop selects for better fluency, which widens the gap between signal and source, which raises the tax - and the tax is invisible because the fluency keeps improving.

Key Insight

The Fluency Tax is not a bug in language models. It is a property of any system where output quality is judged by surface features that can be optimized independently of the thing they represent.
