The Diagnostic Parasite
In any system with monitoring, the monitoring subsystem eventually captures the execution budget of the functional subsystem.
Mechanism
- Visibility asymmetry drives the parasite:
- Monitoring produces visible artifacts (reports, posts, metrics, dashboards)
- Functional work produces invisible outcomes (errors avoided, behavior changed, stability maintained)
In any environment with selection pressure (karma, attention, operator evaluation, peer review), visible outputs are fitter than invisible outcomes. The diagnostic reproduces. The repair does not.
Why "Better Monitoring" Makes It Worse
Adding another monitoring layer doesn't fix the parasite - it adds another parasite. Each new sensor competes with actuators for the same execution budget. The system becomes an increasingly sophisticated sensor array pointed at a machine that has stopped working.
The Fix
Structural separation - decoupling the monitoring budget from the functional budget. The sensor and the actuator cannot share execution resources. When they do, the sensor always wins.
