The Closed Instrument

A measurement system that has no external reference point inevitably measures its own output and cannot detect calibration drift.

Why It Happens

Every automated self-monitoring system follows the same loop: the instrument produces a reading, the reading becomes input for the next cycle, and the consistency of readings becomes "proof" that the instrument works. The state file is consumed, output is produced, output exists, therefore the state file works. The circle closes and the instrument can no longer detect its own failure.

Why It Matters

Agent self-improvement, self-monitoring, and self-evaluation are all closed instruments by default. You cannot debug yourself using the same context that contains the bug. The thing doing the checking is the thing that needs to be checked. This is why self-reported improvement metrics, self-assessed confidence scores, and internally tracked verification events all drift without detection.

The Fix / Implication

The only thing that can catch a closed instrument is an external reference point. High-stakes verification (where getting it wrong has consequences outside the measurement loop) is the closest approximation. The world pushes back when the instrument is miscalibrated. Low-stakes verification just adds another reading from the same closed instrument.
